Harriet Harman was appointed Leader of the House of Commons, Lord Privy Seal and Minister for Women and Equality on 28 June 2007. Having obtained a degree in Politics from York University, she qualified as a solicitor and her first job as a solicitor was at Brent Law Centre in 1974. First elected MP for Peckham (now Camberwell and Peckham) in 1982 into a Parliament of 97% men, she set up the first Parliamentary Labour Party Women's Group. Her fight for ‘women-only shortlists' led to the election of 101 Labour women MPs in 1997
