Climate Change: New Challenges for Humanitarian Aid

12 Nov 2009

The humanitarian community is permanently on the front line in responding to the devastating consequences of extreme weather events. An increase in the frequency and intensity of natural disasters due to climate change means that needs are expected to rise significantly. The response capacity of the affected countries, as well as of international humanitarian and development actors, is therefore increasingly under pressure. Ahead of the key international summit on climate change in Copenhagen in December, this roundtable will convene stakeholders to address pressing issues such as how Europe, as the biggest global provider of humanitarian assistance, is preparing to cope with these major challenges, and how to increase the synergies between climate change adaptation and disaster risk reduction whilst making the policies more effective.
