Implementing the Precautionary Principle
Justifiable and Justified?
This meeting brought together several of the world's leading experts to discuss the key issues raised in recently-published book of the same name with representatives from the Commission (in particular DGs SANCO, ENTR, ENVI and, TRADE), and select participants from NGOs, business and the media.
This publication takes a broad and thought-provoking look at the precautionary principle and its implementation, or potential implementation, in a number of areas. In particular, it explores the challenges faced in public decision-making processes when applying the precautionary principle, including its role in risk management and risk assessment in a number of emerging fields such as nanotechnology, climate change, natural resource management and public health policy.
Speakers included René Von Schomberg, European Commission, Sheila Jasonoff, Harvard University and Professor Brian Wynne, Centre for the Study of Environmental Change (CSEC), Lancaster University.
